Read about some common dental diseases that can help protect your pearly whites.
  1. Tooth decay - this is caused by sugar bugs, that thrive on white sugar. These can be destroyed by strong toothpastes; however these bugs generally hide inside the teeth, under the gums and under the tongue to escape the effect of the toothpaste.
  2. Gingivitis - this disease shows the common symptoms of bleeding, swelling and some pain. It is caused mainly due to improper oral hygiene. The symptoms usually occur when the immune system starts working against the diseases.
  3. Periodontal disease - this chronic disease occurs when gingivitis is suppressed. It may lead to loss of all teeth.
  4. Dental plaque - this is the soft and colourless film of bacteria that constantly builds on the layer of teeth, due to improper oral care. It leads to formation of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate crystal on the surface of teeth.
  5. Bad breathe - one of the most common diseases; it is also due to the presence of bacteria. The odor is caused by the ammonia or hydrogen sulphide from the stomach that is released due to bacterial action on rotten proteins. The bacteria are found on the tongue, under the tongue and hiding in crevices under the gums.
  6. Dental abscess - it is a painful condition caused when pus gets collected in the root of a tooth or at the area between the gums and a tooth. It may cause serious health implications if left untreated.
  7. Dry socket - this complication occurs after tooth extraction. If the natural healing process is delayed, there may be exposure of the jaw bone and severe pain at the site of the extraction that begins about two days following the extraction and tends to worsen over time.
